May Birthstone: Emerald Fun Facts

The word emerald comes from the Latin smaragdus which means green.

Emerald is one of the four recognized precious gemstones along with ruby, sapphire, and diamond.

Emeralds were Cleopatra’s favorite gemstone.

Emeralds are the official gemstone exchanged to celebrate one’s 20th and 55th years of marriage.

Emeralds are relatively strong gemstones, registering 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. While they are fairly resilient to knocks, they can be chipped or scratched.

Emerald is always green. The deeper the color, the more valuable the stone.
